JBS donating USD 6.6 million to address pandemic

The biggest meat producing company in the world, Brazil’s JBS announced that it will provide funds for public health, social, and scientific support actions. The state of São Paulo alone is getting USD 6 million.

Brazil’s JBS, the biggest meat company in the world, is donating BRL 39 million (USD 6.6 million) to address the coronavirus pandemic in the state of São Paulo, and BRL 400 million USD 68 million) across Brazil. The funds in São Paulo will go out to public health, social and scientific support actions, including construction of perennial modular hospitals, purchase of personal protective equipment, health equipment, food kits, and cleaning kits.

“We have a history of commitment to Brazil that goes back over 65 years. We remain completely dedicated to Brazil and Brazilians in fighting this pandemic,” JBS and Seara chair Wesley Batista Filho was quoted as saying. According to him, the donation will be supported by consulting committees comprising independent members to ensure optimal project rollout. Auditing will be provided by consulting firm Grant Thornton, at no charge.

Across Brazil, the BRL 400 million will be allocated to 17 states and 162 cities. Apart from public sector partnerships, the plan includes donations to non-profit organizations that work with poor people, and to research and technology entities focusing on healthcare. JBS is the primary driver of economic activity in 56% of the municipalities that it has factories in.
